UK and Germany Spend Insight Report 16 – 22 May
Consumer and SME Economy report
In this week’s report, spend in the UK was up 8% versus 2021 (YoY), and up 12% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 16% YoY and up 20% Yo3Y. In the UK, Travel spend has recovered to 2019 levels while High Street and Online Retail levels are similar to last year. In Germany, Travel spend growth has slowed, while Sporting Goods and Health & Beauty Shop spend remains encouraging. Consumer wallet share on essential categories is above 2019 levels in both countries.

In this week’s report, spend in the UK was up 6% versus 2021 (YoY), and up 12% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 19% YoY and up 14% Yo3Y. In Q2 for the UK, share of wallet (SOW) has increased for Food & Beverage, Travel and Transport while SOW for Clothing and Grocery has declined (vs Q1). In Q2 for Germany, SOW increased for Food & Beverage, Travel and Public Transport while Grocery, Clothing & Apparel and Fuel SOW declined (vs Q1).

In this week’s report, spend in the UK was up 8% versus 2021 (YoY), and up 13% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 13% YoY and up 10% Yo3Y. Buoyant Restaurant spend has slowed Food Delivery spend growth in both countries. In the UK, Video Streaming customer and spend growth remains strong but YoY growth has slowed. In Germany, Travel spend remains around 2019 levels and Hardware Stores & Garden Centre spend is in decline YoY.

In this week’s report, spend in the UK was up 1% versus 2021 (YoY), and up 6% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 14% YoY and up 4% Yo3Y. In the UK, Grocery basket sizes began to normalise, Public Transport spend improved and Retail spend was down YoY. In Germany, Health & Beauty and Clothing & Apparel spend is up YoY, while online category spend declined. Travel, Transport and Food have the largest improvements in spend YoY.

In this week’s report, spend in the UK was down 3% versus 2021 (YoY*), and up 3% versus 2019 (Yo3Y**). Spend in Germany was up 17% YoY and up 2% Yo3Y. UK spend remained down YoY while Airline and Travel & Tourism spend returned to near-2019 levels. In Germany, Travel spend reached near-2019 levels, Music Streaming Services spend slowed and Food & Beverage spend remained resilient. Rising costs continue to elevate Fuel spend YoY in both countries.

Consumer and SME Economy report
In this week’s report, spend in the UK was down 6% versus 2021 (YoY*), and flat versus 2019 (Yo3Y**). Spend in Germany was up 19% YoY and up 2% Yo3Y. In the UK, spend dropped sharply this week (YoY). High Street and Clothing & Apparel spend declined, while Online spend tracked lower YoY. In Germany, Pub & Restaurant spend remained resilient, while Food Delivery spend declined. Despite a resurgence before Easter, Airline spend is almost a fifth below 2019 levels.
