UK and Germany Spend Insight Report 17 – 23 Oct
Consumer and SME Economy report
In this week’s report, spend in the UK was up 1% versus 2021 (YoY) and up 7% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 3% YoY and up 15% Yo3Y. In the UK, Travel spend growth has been offset by lower goods related spend. Grocery basket sizes edge higher while Beer & Wine spend is weaker YoY. In Germany, Grocery spend is tracking higher YoY supported by increased transaction volumes and basket sizes. Fuel transaction sizes remain elevated while Food and Beverage spend continues to be higher YoY.

Consumer and SME Economy report
In this week’s report, spend in the UK was up 2% versus 2021 (YoY) and up 9% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 2% YoY and up 14% Yo3Y. In the UK, lower spend growth across retail is being offset by Travel and Transport category growth. While spend is higher across Travel and Transport it largely reflects higher prices rather than increasing demand. In Germany, Food & Beverage continues to see consistent growth, particularly in Restaurants. Travel spend across Airlines and Car Rental is tracking broadly in line with last year, while Clothing & Apparel spend growth has dropped further.

In the UK, Retail spend remains down YoY across Clothing & Apparel, Sporting Goods and Electronics. Grocery ‘share of stomach’ has returned to 2019 levels, while Pubs & Restaurants share is lower. In Germany, Food & Beverage continues to see consistent YoY growth, with Pubs & Restaurants ‘share of stomach’ improving. Retail goods spend is continuing to track lower relative to last year.

In this week’s report, spend in the UK was up 2% versus 2021 (YoY) and up 8% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 10% YoY and up 8% Yo3Y. In the UK, Restaurant spend has recovered to be above last year’s levels, Food Delivery spend is trending towards last year’s levels and High Street spend continues to track lower YoY. In Germany, slowing travel related spend is continuing to be offset by strong performance in Food & Beverage which remains elevated. High Street spend is tracking higher YoY.

Consumer and SME Economy report
In this week’s report, spend in the UK was down 8% versus 2021 (YoY) and flat 0% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 4% YoY and up 11% Yo3Y. In the UK, YoY growth has slowed in recent weeks, particularly in sectors which experienced tailwinds during last year’s reopening period (e.g. Airlines, Travel & Tourism). In Germany, YoY growth is at the lowest levels since June. Airline spend is currently in line with last year while Food & Beverage spend growth YoY has slowed.

In this week’s report, spend in the UK was flat 0% versus 2021 (YoY) and up 6% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 13% YoY and up 16% Yo3Y. In the UK, General Merchandise is the only Retail category to be up both YoY and versus 2019 while Airlines remains the top performing spend category YoY. In Germany, spend is up across all Retail categories YoY. Electronics has bounced back while Clothing & Apparel and Electronics are the only Retail categories with spend below 2019.

Consumer and SME Economy report
In this week’s report, spend in the UK was down 1% versus 2021 (YoY) and up 7% versus 2019 (Yo3Y). Spend in Germany was up 11% YoY and up 17% Yo3Y. In the UK, Airline spend momentum is slowing following the summer peak. Fuel and Public Transport spend is up but High Street spend remains lower YoY despite improving activity. In Germany, the end of state-subsidised Public Transport has seen spend increase while High Street spend remains broadly in line with last year. Travel & Tourism spend is up YoY but growth rates are slowing.
